Getting Started

Download the Application

First, download the Website Access Blocker application from our download page. The application is available as a Windows executable file (.exe) and requires no additional installation steps.

Download Options:

  • Windows Executable (.exe) - Recommended for most users
  • Source Code (.zip) - For advanced users who want to modify the application

Run as Administrator

Since Website Access Blocker modifies system files (the hosts file), it requires administrator privileges to function correctly. Right-click on the executable file and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu.

Important: Always run the application as administrator to ensure it can properly modify the hosts file.

Complete First-time Setup

When you first run the application, you'll be guided through a simple setup process:

1. Welcome Screen

Click "Next" to continue with the setup.

2. User Agreement

Read and accept the user agreement to proceed.

3. Backup Options

Choose to create a backup of your current hosts file (recommended).

4. Password Setup (Optional)

Set a password to protect your blocking settings from unauthorized changes.

5. Completion

Click "Finish" to complete the setup and launch the main application.

Basic Usage

Adding Websites

To add websites to your blocking list:

  1. Click on the "Add Website" button in the main interface
  2. Enter the domain name of the website you want to block (e.g., youtube.com)
  3. Select the category for the website (optional)
  4. Click "Add" to confirm

Tips:

  • • You don't need to include "www" - it will be blocked automatically
  • • Multiple websites can be added at once, separated by commas
  • • Use categories to organize your blocked websites

Applying Templates

To use preset blocking templates:

  1. Go to the "Templates" tab in the main interface
  2. Browse available templates (Work, Study, Entertainment, etc.)
  3. Select the template you want to use
  4. Click "Apply Template" to add all websites in the template to your blocking list

Tips:

  • • Templates are pre-configured with common distracting websites
  • • You can modify the websites in a template after applying it
  • • Multiple templates can be applied together

Enabling/Disabling Blocking

To control the blocking feature:

  1. Use the main toggle switch in the application window to enable or disable blocking
  2. When blocking is enabled, all websites in your list will be inaccessible
  3. When blocking is disabled, all websites will be accessible again

Tips:

  • • Changes take effect immediately - no need to restart browsers
  • • If you have password protection enabled, you'll need to enter your password to disable blocking
  • • You can schedule automatic enabling/disabling in the settings

Managing Blocked Websites

To manage your blocked websites:

  1. Go to the "Blocked Websites" tab to see all blocked sites
  2. Use the search bar to find specific websites
  3. Click the "Remove" button next to a website to unblock it
  4. Use the "Edit" button to change the category of a website

Tips:

  • • You can sort websites by name, category, or date added
  • • Select multiple websites to remove them in bulk
  • • Export your blocked list for backup or sharing

Advanced Usage

Command Line Interface [In Development]

Website Access Blocker also provides a command line interface for advanced users. This feature is currently in development. Here are some common commands:

Scheduling Feature

Backup and Restore

It's important to back up your settings to avoid losing your blocked website list:

Creating a Backup

  1. Go to the "Settings" tab
  2. Click on "Backup Settings"
  3. Choose a location to save the backup file
  4. Click "Save" to create the backup

Restoring from Backup

  1. Go to the "Settings" tab
  2. Click on "Restore Settings"
  3. Select your backup file
  4. Click "Restore" to apply the backup

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

Website is still accessible after blocking

• Clear your browser cache and cookies • Restart your browser • Make sure the correct domain is blocked (e.g., both "youtube.com" and "www.youtube.com")

Application won't start

• Make sure you're running it as administrator • Check that you have the correct version for your Windows OS • Disable antivirus temporarily and try again (some antivirus may block system modifications)

Can't disable blocking

• Make sure you're running as administrator • If password protected, ensure you're entering the correct password • Try restarting the application
